SHERIFF’S OFFICE RELEASES NAMES AND DETAILS OF RECENT OJC DEATHS
UPDATED STATEMENT
NEW ORLEANS – Today, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson released the names and additional details of both deceased former residents of the Orleans Justice Center.
Mr. Philip Soublet
Mr. Philip Soublet, a 31 year-old black male, was pronounced dead by physicians at University Medical Center on Saturday, 11 June 2022 at 1:39 p.m. after a physical altercation on Friday, 10 June 2022 that occurred inside OJC. The Orleans Parish Coroner determined the cause of death to be from blunt force injuries.
The death of Mr. Soublet is being investigated by the Investigative Services Bureau and Internal Affairs Division of OPSO under the leadership of Asst. Sheriff Kristen Morales, along with the NOPD's Homicide Unit. Mr. Soublet's death has been classified as a homicide by the Orleans Parish Coroner. Sheriff Hutson announced that she would release the surveillance video from the incident after investigations are completed.
Mr. Chad Neyland
Mr. Chad Neyland, a 46 year-old white male, was pronounced dead on Sunday, 12 June 2022 at 1:17 p.m. by physicians at University Medical Center. The Coroner's Office stated his cause of death remained under investigation.
Mr. Neyland was originally reported to have been unhoused and without readily determinable next-of-kin. His family has, since, been located and informed through cooperation with neighboring law enforcement agencies.
OPSO also announced they will shortly unveil a new policy to inform the public how they will handle the release of names and other identifying information about residents at OJC.
The Sheriff's Office also launched a new section of its website dedicated to keeping the public and the media informed. Visitors will soon be able to visit www.OPSO.us/media to the latest information released from the Sheriff's Office.
