NEW ORLEANS - 03-18-2020

Following is a statement from Sheriff Marlin Gusman regarding precautions at the Orleans Justice Center surrounding COVID-19 or coronavirus:

"Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office has a plan in place for illnesses such as pandemic flu which has been modified to better fit COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus. We are in communication with the New Orleans Department of Health, the Louisiana Office of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to ensure that we are taking the preliminary steps necessary to protect the public, our staff and our inmates.

Our medical department, Wellpath, has developed a coronavirus screening process for all new arrestees and current inmates which includes several targeted questions surrounding their activities and interactions over the past 14 days.

In the event of a suspected case at the Orleans Justice Center, we have established protocol to test individuals for the virus and report said cases to the CDC and Department of Health. Accommodations have also been made to quarantine any affected individuals.

All OPSO employees have been notified of this plan, advised on ways to avoid exposure to the virus and urged to notify their supervisors and stay home if they are feeling ill. Additional hand sanitation stations have also been installed throughout our facilities.

We are continuing to communicate with our medical staff as well as local, state and federal authorities surrounding new developments."
