Archbishop Aymond to Celebrate Holy Thursday Washing of Feet Service with OPSO Inmates

NEW ORLEANS - 04-16-2019

Service to take place inside Orleans Justice Center

New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond will visit the Orleans Justice Center where he will be the principal celebrant for a Holy Thursday service at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18. During the service, the Archbishop will wash the feet of both male and female OPSO inmates.

The service recreates a key event of Holy Week when Jesus washed the feet of the 12 apostles at The Last Supper.

"This is the fourth year the Archbishop has made a special visit to the Orleans Justice Center during the Easter Season," said Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman. "We're honored that he has chosen to be with incarcerated persons on Holy Thursday to exercise Jesus' commandment that we should imitate His loving humility in the washing of the feet."

In 2016, the Archbishop was the main celebrant at a Stations of the Cross Service at the Orleans Justice Center. He has returned every year since then for a Washing of the Feet Service on Holy Thursday.
